Mesh Mash was founded in late 2014 as a design and screen printing program at Woods Street Arts Space in Laverton. The project received funding from Hobsons Bay City Council’s Mayoral program, under the name ‘I am a Local’ to engage with young people in Hobsons Bay.
A print making studio was developed to enable young participants a way of owning their ideas and empowering them through designing and making products to sell. The young people originally engaged in the program known as the ‘Foundation Crew’, came up with the idea for the name for the program. Mesh Mash can be translated as the fine mesh of a print making screen alongside the design process, which is all about collaboration and mashing ideas together.
This short film was created to show people what Mesh Mash is about - Mesh Mash 2016
In April 2017 Mesh Mash moved up the road to its dedicated studio and shop space at 54 Woods Street Laverton. The studio offers opportunities for young people to bring creative ideas to life through the online Design Generator and a studio based workshop program. Young people involved in the social enterprise also gain valuable skills in marketing and business through supporting sales. Hand printed and designed products include quality limited edition clothing, tote bags, notebooks and accessories.
During the 5 years in operation, the young people involved in the program have worked in collaboration with leading local artists, these include Geoffrey Ricardo, Regan Tamanui, Tom Civil, Joel Galier -Performprint, Sayraphim Lothian, Alex Hotchin and Celeste Potter.
